Lamella Settler

Lamella Settler is a gravity sedimentation unit that removes suspended solids by shortening the vertical distance a particle has to travel before it is captured. Rather than depending on a large open basin, the Lamella Settler stacks parallel plates at a fixed inclination so that settled solids slide continuously down into the sludge hopper while clarified water rises to the collection launder. This working principle lets a Lamella Settler reach the separation result of a far larger conventional basin while occupying only a fraction of the plan area.

We build every Lamella Settler as a shop assembled unit that is water tested before dispatch, so the equipment arrives ready to be connected, filled and commissioned. Each Lamella Settler is sized around measured water quality, hydraulic load and the layout limits of the site, and is available with CE and ISO certification together with the documentation package required by international wastewater projects.

Customized Service

Every Lamella Settler we supply starts from project data rather than from a catalogue page. We ask for the water analysis, the design flow and the space envelope, and we size the plate area, hopper volume and inlet distribution accordingly.

Where the settling behaviour of the water is uncertain, our laboratory can run jar tests to identify a suitable coagulant and dosage before the Lamella Settler is sized, which avoids both undersizing and unnecessary capital cost.

Customisation of a Lamella Settler commonly covers plate material and spacing, structural material, surface protection, hopper angle, sludge discharge method, launder arrangement, walkway and handrail design, and integration with existing tanks or downstream dewatering equipment.


Quality Control and Factory Testing

1. Shallow Depth Sedimentation Multiplies the Effective Settling Area

Sedimentation performance is governed by projected settling area rather than by tank volume. A Lamella Settler exploits this directly by presenting dozens of stacked plate surfaces to the rising flow, so the projected area available for particle capture is many times the plan area the unit actually occupies.

Because the clear distance between two adjacent plates is only a few centimetres, a particle inside a Lamella Settler needs to fall only that short distance before it reaches a solid surface and is removed from the flow. Settling that would take hours in an open basin is completed in minutes.

Flow inside the plate pack of a Lamella Settler stays in the laminar range, which prevents the short circuiting and turbulent re-suspension that often limit the real performance of conventional clarifiers.


2. Consistent Effluent Quality Under Fluctuating Load

Industrial discharge is rarely constant. Batch production, shift changes, backwash returns and cleaning cycles can send sudden peaks of flow and solids into the clarification stage.

The laminar regime inside a Lamella Settler protects freshly formed floc from being sheared apart, so the unit keeps producing clarified water when the inlet load rises. Effluent turbidity from a Lamella Settler therefore stays far more stable than that of an open basin exposed to wind, temperature layering and density currents.

Where influent quality swings widely, the Lamella Settler can be supplied with an integrated coagulation and flocculation compartment ahead of the plate pack so that chemical conditioning and clarification are handled inside a single structure.


3. Gravity Sludge Discharge Without Mechanical Drives

Inside the separation zone of a Lamella Settler there is no scraper bridge, no rotating shaft and no submerged gearbox. Solids collected on the plate surfaces slide down by gravity along the inclination angle and accumulate in the hopper below.

Removing rotating equipment from the wetted zone eliminates the most common failure points of a clarifier, which are bearing wear, shaft misalignment and drive overload caused by heavy or fibrous sludge. Maintenance of a Lamella Settler is limited mainly to periodic inspection and washing of the plate pack.

Sludge withdrawal from the Lamella Settler can be handled by a timed valve, a pinch valve or a dedicated sludge pump, and the discharge sequence can be linked to the plant control system for unattended operation.


4. Low Energy Demand and Reduced Whole Life Cost

A Lamella Settler works on gravity. The only significant energy users associated with the unit are the feed pump and the sludge discharge device, so the power demand per cubic metre treated stays very low compared with mechanically driven separation equipment.

Lower civil volume is the second saving. Because the Lamella Settler replaces a large concrete basin with a compact steel structure, foundation work, excavation and construction time are all reduced.

Over a full operating life the combination of low power draw, few wear parts and reduced civil works usually makes the Lamella Settler the lowest total cost option among gravity clarification alternatives.


5. Modular Fabrication and Fast Site Installation

Every Lamella Settler is fabricated, assembled and leak tested in our workshop before shipment. Plate packs are supplied as bolt together modules that can be lifted out individually, which keeps transport dimensions within standard container limits.


Depending on project needs the Lamella Settler can be delivered in the following formats:

· Skid mounted single unit for direct placement on a prepared slab

· Containerised package with pumps, dosing skid and control panel pre-wired

· Plate packs only, for insertion into an existing concrete sedimentation tank

· Multiple parallel trains sharing one inlet distribution channel

· Open top or fully covered configuration for odour sensitive sites

The Lamella Settler suits any stream where settleable or chemically conditioned solids must be separated from water within a limited footprint. Typical sectors are listed below.


Textile and Dyeing Wastewater

Dyeing, printing and finishing lines discharge highly coloured water carrying dye particles, sizing agents and fibre fragments. After coagulation the resulting floc is light and easily broken, which makes gentle separation essential.

A Lamella Settler placed after the flocculation stage captures this fragile floc without shearing it, reducing colour and suspended solids ahead of biological treatment or membrane polishing.


Electroplating and Surface Treatment

Plating shops generate rinse water containing metal hydroxide precipitates formed during neutralisation. These precipitates settle slowly and occupy a large volume.

The Lamella Settler separates hydroxide sludge from the treated rinse water and concentrates it in the hopper, which lowers the load on the downstream filter press and helps the discharge meet metal limits.


Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemical Plants

Pharmaceutical and fine chemical sites often run several production lines with very different effluent characteristics, and available land inside the fenced area is usually scarce.

A compact Lamella Settler can be inserted into the pretreatment train to remove precipitated solids, spent catalyst carriers and crystallised by-products before the stream reaches the biological stage.


Sand Washing and Aggregate Production

Aggregate washing produces large volumes of water heavy with silt and clay. Discharging this water to settling ponds consumes land and requires regular dredging.

With polymer dosing ahead of the inlet, a Lamella Settler clarifies washing water for immediate reuse in the wash plant and delivers a thickened underflow suitable for a dewatering press, allowing the site to close the water loop.


Construction and Tunnelling Slurry Water

Piling, diaphragm walling and tunnel boring generate bentonite bearing slurry water that cannot be released to municipal drains without treatment.

Because a Lamella Settler is compact and can be relocated between work fronts, it fits temporary construction sites where a fixed sedimentation basin is impractical.


Drinking Water and Surface Water Clarification

Raw river and reservoir water shows strong seasonal turbidity peaks after heavy rainfall, and treatment plants must absorb those peaks without exceeding filter capacity.

Installed between the flocculation basin and the sand filters, a Lamella Settler removes the bulk of the turbidity, stabilises filter run times and reduces backwash frequency during flood periods.


Aquaculture and Recirculating Water Systems

Recirculating aquaculture depends on rapid removal of uneaten feed and faecal solids, since dissolved organics released by decaying solids consume oxygen and stress the stock.

A Lamella Settler on the recirculation loop takes out settleable solids continuously at low head loss, protecting the biofilter and helping maintain water clarity.


Landfill Leachate Pretreatment

Leachate carries high concentrations of suspended and colloidal matter that would rapidly foul membranes in a downstream reverse osmosis or nanofiltration stage.

Used after lime or coagulant dosing, a Lamella Settler removes precipitated solids and reduces the fouling load reaching the membrane system.
